Kai Tana has invaded Mercadia! Seriously, the Empires & Allies villains remind me of the bad guys from Captain Planet, but with punny names.
This time I got more into Zynga’s first battle system, and it’s quite interesting. There are three “Theaters”, Land, Sea, and Air. Inside each are three unit types that act like Stone Paper Scissors, which determine damage. Further, each unit type has a different amount of health and there are several ‘classes’, for example there’s the “Vintage Battleship”, the “Light Battleship”, and I assume eventually I’ll be unlocking a “Heavy Battleship”.
Choosing your opponent is rather straight forward, but you also have to consider who the enemy will be shooting at. For example, compare the 1st and 4th battles below. In the first battle, my Carriers take Kai Tana’s Blimps, and my Battleship (at least it should have been a Battleship) takes Kai Tana’s Fighter. Very straight forward. However, in the 4th battle, even though my Gunship takes her Bomber, now her Blimps have the advantage against my Gunship! So do I try to take out both her Blimps before they sink my Gunship, or do I fire away at the bomber, knowing that my Gunship is doomed?
So the battles are actually really interesting. The only downside is that they are completely a single-player affair, and the AI is rather daft. Even when you invade one of your neighbours, it seems that you fight against five random troops, all controlled by the computer. Then, whenever they get around to “repelling” you, they’ll fight against your troops, again controlled by the computer.
Anyway, here is the next set of battles so you can see what types of troops you’ll need a when.
