Tales of Aloriah II – pt6

Well, it has been a long while but it’s time to catch up. The war with Aernoud is in full swing. I went to work taking back my mine and the nearby tower. This pissed him off again and in came his Slepenir horses. I have to say, it’s a little demoralizing when I don’t even kill one of his Berserkers, but that’s okay. I have no delusions of defeating Aernoud militarily, only morally.

Meanwhile, back in the marketplace, I won a fantastic bid, the Pouch of Diamonds, which magically pours out a few diamonds each hour. This let me reach one of my long term goals, building a Research Centre Level 10. I hadn’t really kept track if anyone else had reached that yet, but it was very surprising when, 8 hours later, another player received the award for building it. Pardon?

Back to the main event: the Mines and Towers exchanged hands back and forth. I raised up an Underground Cave and Garrison in Solway to protect it from Aernoud’s constant assaults. My armies scattered to the winds, taking on new names of “Thorn”, to manifest their new purpose, and began seizing any of Aernoud’s towers or mines that I could find. He came by and decimated my city a few times, but with my Underground Cave the amount of loot he actually took was relatively low. I keep running the math in my head: as long as he is spending more than 36 Gold per hour to fight me, then I am victorious. I will cost his armies so much time hunting me across the world, having to reclaim his mines over and over again, that it would have been more worthwhile to just find a mine that didn’t belong to me. Will this single-minded drive of vengeance be my downfall? Indeed. But I will take Aernoud with me.

Cheers,
Oliver

Nice Pvp! Keep it up :) Couldn’t stop myself from laughing about the quick constructor achievement though, we have seen this many times before and it’s always really frustrating!

    And as always, nice reading!

    Hahah, epic.

Nice post. It is funny to read how other players look at you. Never thought of myself as a bully, but then I am not at the receiving end of my actions….

I really enjoy playing Aloriah. I have been playing from Beta and won a few rounds and lost some too. The early stage of Aloriah is like the wild west. Everybody is waiting on their horses when the new game round starts, they all go off to find a nice spot to build up their new home. The ones who are first get to choose the best spots, claim the best mines and towers and can start building their village, resources and troops to take a next step into a tougher but more rewarding peace of the world.

One of the keys of winning Aloriah is to get expand as fast as you can, without overstretching yourself. This round was challenging. There are more and more experienced players that join the rush. But there are also others that cannot keep up or are less interested in the rush and take their own time getting to where they want to go.

Unfortunately they find all the good spots are taken and towers and the best mines are claimed. As this is the wild west they then have the option to see if they can take over some of the towers and mines as there is no law telling them not to. But they do run the risk of former ´owners´ of those towers and mines to disagree with their actions and letting them know, one way or another, that they do not agree with loosing their things. And they usually bring lots of troops to send home that msg.

In the beginning of the round I loose a tower several times a week. First I ask them nicely to stop doing that. In most cases that does the trick I reclaim my mine and things settle back to where they were. If that does not work (they take over another one of the towers I claimed) I try to threaten them away. Again this works most of the times. But every round there are a couple of players that this strategy does not work and I need to bring out my troops to support my threat. I run over their army and village to let them know I don´t make empty threats. But with Oliver that did not work either.

He did not reply to my msgs so at first I thought he could not speak English very well or was too young to understand, but then I got a msg that made it clear he was very much aware what he was doing. Like Oliver posted somewhere in his blog. He does not take too much notice of nametags hanging on stuff (though he does refer to the mine he keeps taking from me as ´my mine´).

The msg he send me was ´olivergodfreed2011-08-07 03:45:38 Sorry about the mine. Too good to pass up. Best of luck finding another good one!´ First I was surprised, then a bit pissed, but after a few hours I saw the fun of it and replied ´aernoud2011-08-07 09:24:51 Sorry about your village and armies. Good luck building new ones :P ´

Actually they changed the settings this round and I found out I could no longer demolish his village. But I could still plunder him. So my next msg was ´aernoud2011-08-07 20:16:55 Thank you for your resources. They are a more then welcome addition to my supplies… You plundered wood7984, stone9715, iron2147, gold2117 and diamond54.´

After plundering his village I reclaimed the mine and tower and to my surprise I saw one of his armies heading up to mine. Not a very smart move (as my army was much stronger then his). I warned him off ´aernoud2011-08-07 22:36:05 Oliver, I hope you are not planning to attack me with that ‘R&R’ army of yours. You are seriously overmatched and this will not end well. Better pull back before you loose your troops. My zergs are fully upgraded and more then 2x their original strength.´ He pulled back his army at the last moment and I thought that was the last of it. And it was…….. for a few weeks.

WTF, Oliver took another go at the mine and tower. So I bring out my troops again. Brought some uber units so I would not loose any troops. Hit his army, his village and reclaimed the tower and mine. But this time Oliver did not stop. He kept coming back for more. And he can. There is not much more I can do then hit his village and armies and reclaim the tower and mines. He will loose some troops and some resources, but he is not in the race of killing the MD, so in the long run, those losses are probably not that much of a problem. He may not make it the Marshes or Ashlands if I keep harassing his troops, but that is about the extend of it.

So I had to make a choice. Spend time and energy on Oliver and play his game of cat and mouse or find another mine. The last option was not difficult. I have explored about 1/3rd of DS now and there are several similar good mines for the taking. Maybe partly because I am stubborn, but I think mostly because I wanted too, I decided to play cat and mouse. I am not much of a PvP player. I don´t go about hitting players over the head just because I can. But I was starting to have some fun.

This was a part of the game I had not tried out. So I am now exploring the options on how to make Olivers life in Aloriah as uncomfertable as I can (without spending too much time on it, as the main goal is to bring our alliance to the top). Firstly I found a nice ´run´ near Olivers town. A ´run´ is a route where I can visit ruins, pick up some treasure, hit some dragons, close some gates. And now that run also includes hitting Olivers village once a day. The same happens with any of his armies I meet along the way and of course reclaim any towers and mines Oliver took.

Secondly I asked some of my alliance friends to pay him a visit if they were in the neighborhood. I don´t know how often that happens. But I know of a few visits that did happen.

Thirdly I am now also visiting his other villages, taking any of the towers and mines he has claimed along the way.

And lastly I am building an army that specializes in stealing items and plundering. So Oliver, as you are reading this, better stash away some of those items you gotten from the auction as I am coming for them.

And I have some other surprises in mind that I am working on. Now that my villages are mostly developed and the phase has started where the attention shifts from developing to hitting the MD and rebuilding your troops, this is a nice sideplay. I may actually get my PvP achievements this round.

So Oliver. Lets play cat and mouse. I am really looking forward to this :)

Haha, Brilliant. Thank you Aernoud for your reply! It’s definitely interesting to learn about the other side of things.

Comparing Aloriah to the Wild West is a great simile. Even though it’s set in a world with dragons and vikings, it definitely captures that feel.

And you indeed stole some of my items. Damn. I didn’t count on you having so much fun attacking me. But I am resolute! Gird yourself!
